Alex Lebedeva

Fundraising Coordinator

Alex was born on February 25th, 1987 in Sumy, a Ukrainian city. Alex and her family moved to Canada in the fall of 2000 at age thirteen. She first resided in Niagara Falls, however moved to Hamilton to attend Mohawk College.  It was at Mohawk College where she met a Liberty For Youth volunteer and decided to get involved as a volunteer as well. Alex is currently in the third year of Mohawk’s Child and Youth Worker program, and has recently begun a French language course.

Community: Alex has volunteered with the Niagara International Children's Society since its Canadian beginning in 2002. She began as a participant of concerts and events, and later moved on to volunteering at the NICS School of Decorative Painting.

Plans: Alex is working on receiving a certificate in Child and Youth Work, as well as a Bachelors of Art to be able to become a High School teacher. “With Liberty For Youth, I hope to assist the organization to raise funds for the development of Refuge Place, provide scholarships and bursaries for at-risk youth, and help to sustain Liberty’s outreach programs. Vinusiya Shanmugalingam

Program Administrator


Vinusiya was born in a small city in Germany, and is of Sri Lankan descent. She has lived as a Canadian citizen for over 17 years and presently lives in Hamilton while she completes her post-secondary education. Vinusiya visions that Liberty for Youth's peer tutoring program will consist of more volunteers to tutor future students, helping them to help them build a prosperous future for themselves.

Education: Vinysiya is currently attending McMaster University, finishing her third year of studies in an Honours Life Science and English minor degree. Vinusiya is also an Ontario Secondary Scholar Graduate from Bloor Collegiate Institute

Community: Vinusiya has coordinated and organized a variety of children’s programs for many cultural events. Her responsibility at one program was to choreograph dance movements for children between the ages of 5 and 12, while ensuring a safe atmosphere, for two hours daily, three weeks. She tutored a grade six student for math and science for one semester at Brock Public School, and also worked alongside a Grade 10 history teacher, peer tutoring his students for one year

Vinusiya has been volunteering with Liberty for the past year; her main responsibility is to tutor students. Currently, she is tutoring one grade seven, and two grade eight and students, with their difficulties in English and helping them to complete their weekly homework. Previously, she had tutored a high school student who is now attending college studying various subjects such as Science, Math and Social Studies.

Plans: After finishing her Honours degree at McMaster University, Vinusiya will apply to the Michener Institute of Applied Sciences for the 3-year Chiropody program in Toronto. Her future goals with Liberty are to continue being a peer tutor, and concentrate on the academic success of the students that attend the tutoring program. She hopes to assist her students with any subject they wish to recieve help with, to ensure that they complete high school with honour roll marks so that they able to apply to a wide variety of post-secondary schools.

Krista

Event Coordinator


Krista grew up in Waterloo, Ontario and moved to Hamilton to begin her Communications degree at McMaster University in 2005. Krista has a passion for performing and has been involved with several theatrical and musical productions in her community back in Waterloo and at McMaster. Finishing up her bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Film, Krista is working on gaining experience by volunteering with Liberty For Youth and developing skills in the area of communications, public relations and event coordination. 

Community: Krista has always enjoyed organizing and planning events and has had the pleasure to learn more about it through working at Career Services at McMaster University as the Events and Marketing Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator. Planning and recruiting volunteers for large on campus events such as Career Fair, Continuing Education Fair, Networking Breakfasts, Summer Job Search Survival Program, Company and Educational Information Sessions and more she is able to provide a strong foundation of knowledge to bring to the passion and drive with Liberty For Youth.

Plans: To bring her energy, enthusiasm and passion providing youth with fun and insightful events to their lives and help create an atmosphere for youth to feel comfortable and learn more about what is available to help them grow as individuals.

Jnisha Theiventhiran

Volunteer Coordinator


Jnisha was born August 1st, 1982 in Sri Lanka to Tamil parents.  Her Family lived in Germany before coming to Canada in 1992.  Jnisha moved to Hamilton to attend McMaster University and Mohawk College where she learned about Liberty For Youth, and got involved as a volunteer.  She currently lives in Toronto, and works as a Registered Practical Nurse.

Community: Jnisha has been a volunteer in her communities for several years.  She began volunteering as a tutor for elementary students, and later began to volunteer at church organizations, hospitals, and now also volunteers for Liberty for Youth.

Plans: Jnisha will be returning to school in September 2008, to upgrade her nursing education, so she can one day become a nurse practitioner.  Jnisha is now our official Volunteer Coordinator.  If you or anyone you know interested in volunteer with Liberty For Youth, you can contact her at volunteer@libertyforyouth.org.
